WHY COVER YOUR BOAT OR JET SKI?

Your watercraft represents an investment of both time and money. Keeping it safe and covered while not in use has been shown to increase the lifespan of your boat or jet ski due to decreased wear and tear from inclement weather and UV damage.

Warmer weather brings opportunities to be on the water, and generally you want to spend as little time cleaning before heading out as possible. Keeping a cover on your boat while not in use and during will keep dirt, dust, bird droppings, insects, and other foreign objects out and cleaning to a minimum. Elite Shield™ marine covers are all water resistant, keeping rain out and leading to less mold and mildew growth over time.

However, the biggest benefit to using a boat cover during the summer is the UV protection. The most damaging element to fiberglass finishes on most modern boats is the direct summer sun, which causes the degradation of the gel finish on the boat’s exterior. This breakdown causes a chalky finish that cannot be repaired, only replaced- an expensive and time consuming process done best by professionals. It’s better to protect your boat or jet ski up front and skip the repair trips as often as possible, which saves you money and time.

Covers also function as a theft deterrent- the increased time it takes a potential thief to uncover your marine craft before being able to access the inside of the vehicle makes it a less appealing target than one left uncovered. Another benefit of covering your boat is keeping prying eyes from seeing what is inside, further lowering the chances of being a target for crime.

How To Cover Your Boat

  • MAKE SURE YOUR VEHICLE EXTERIOR IS CLEAN

Give your boat a good look to make sure there’s no debris that can get caught between the cover and the vehicle exterior- if trapped, leaves, sticks, or other foreign materials can cause scratches to the finish. Also check the interior of the cover for things that shouldn’t be there. Wipe down any areas inside the boat that are wet so moisture doesn’t get trapped inside the cover. Once you’re sure everything is clear, proceed to step two.

  • LINE UP THE BOAT STERN AND THE FRONT OF THE COVER

The front and back ends of the cover are indicated with sewn-in tags. Line up the front of the cover on or near the boat stern, and unroll the cover towards the back of the boat. Once unrolled, slip the front of the cover over the bow and start unfolding the cover, pulling it over the sides of the boat. If covering overnight, it’s generally not necessary to use support poles (sold separately) to support the cover and keep fabric from sagging. For longer term storage, poles are recommended to extend the life of the cover.

  • ADJUSTING THE COVER FIT

Once the cover is fully on the boat, pull it tight to eliminate any sagging areas and secure it. EliteShield™ boat covers feature an elasticized hem for easy setup. Also included are heavy duty trailering straps for added security during outdoor storage or transport.

  • REMOVING THE COVER AFTER USE

To uncover your boat, first make sure the cover is dry before storage. Then, pull the elastic hem up and over the sides of the boat. Starting at the back, fold the sides of the cover to the center of the boat and roll the resulting folded cover towards the boat stern. Once rolled, use a trailering strap to secure the cover in shape and put away in the included mesh bag. Storing the boat cover in this way makes it easier to use it in the future.

How To Cover Your Personal Watercraft

  • MAKE SURE YOUR VEHICLE EXTERIOR IS CLEAN

Give your PWC a good look to make sure there’s no debris that can get caught between the cover and the vehicle exterior- if trapped, leaves, sticks, or other foreign materials can cause scratches to the finish. Make sure the jet ski is wiped down and dry. Also check the interior of the cover for things that shouldn’t be there. Once you’re sure everything is clear, proceed to the next step.

  • LINE UP THE FRONT BUMPER AND THE FRONT OF THE COVER

The front end of the cover is indicated with a sewn in tag. Gently place the cover on the PWC but don’t secure it just yet. EliteShield™ offers both semi-custom and custom fit covers for PWC, and both follow the same procedure for use. Start by fitting the cover over the mirrors and then over the handlebars. Pull the cover down over the front of the craft and work towards the back. Make sure the cover goes over the seat, and around each corner of the back. If the cover doesn’t reach, the cover is too small for your watercraft. If this happens, contact customer service.

  • ADJUSTING THE FIT OF YOUR COVER

All EliteShield™ PWC covers feature an elastic hem with quick release straps for easy securing. Pull the sides as smooth as they can go and clip straps into place. Some EliteShield™ PWC covers are trailerable- for those, make sure covers are securely strapped to just the craft during transport.
